THE 1ST EARTH DAY WAS 50 YEARS AGO – YOU HAVE TIME TO THINK ABOUT THAT!
Much of humanity will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in isolation at home, wondering how to keep busy.
It was to have been a week of global climate strikes. Instead, it is a week with ample time for contemplating our fragility, interconnectedness and responsibility for each other. Hours to visualize the coming food and water shortages, mass extinctions, and millions made homeless by sea level rise, famine and fire. Entire evenings considering whether we were really too busy to get involved.
And time for mustering righteous anger and preparing to put it to good use. The pandemic has shown that massive mobilization against grave threats is possible; that we are capable of more than we ever dreamed. When we have stopped COVID-19, we will be ready to stop the destruction of our planet.
All that’s needed is more of us in the fight. I belong to Elders Climate Action, a national organization mobilizing the collective power of over 12,500 members to protect our children, our grandchildren and future generations from the threat of climate change. There’s a climate change organization for everyone, in every community. As we try to fill our idle time, time is running out.
